Description:
Laura Moreton-Griffiths’ work considers the traditions of painting and the art of the past. The paintings reference the Picturesque, the Pastoral and Sublime, though the underlying notions are seldom sublime in themselves and make comment on our present day culture and cultural anxieties. Her practice investigates and contemporizes notions surrounding ‘landscape’, re-presenting landscape’s historical emergence and socio-political importance. In her current work, she presents small paintings of figurines that portray the convergence of real life and still life, history and modernity. Well-observed and painterly, the objects are decontextualized and larger than life, asking that they be viewed for what they are – Arcadian parodies and the traces of our rural traditions in an increasingly distanced urban society.
Laura takes a multidisciplinary approach: researching, drawing, painting in oil and watercolour, making models and using found objects.
