“Tar and Rust” 36x46cm.Hand-embroidered on hessian, cotton, linen and wool with gesso and rust.2009
Genre: 2D, textiles.
Artist statement:
My work is about reinterpreting, reinventing my experiences and my internal world in a way which I hope may trigger a response, a memory, a smile in the viewer. I love the integrity of textiles and hand-processes, particularly stitch, and I use them to make 2-dimensional, wall-based pieces, which often incorporate text and found objects, to suggest a narrative. I also make artists books with a textile dimension. Particular influences are old postcards, poetry, folk tales, the writing of Angela Carter and the work of Annette Messager and Kiki Smith. But all textile artists exert a pull for me.
