‘If We Were Clouds I’d Jump On You’ 90cm x 90cm, acrylic on canvas,2009
Genre:
2D: Painting.
Artist statement
My work explores, the relationship between a child’s mark making and abstraction, and the friction between the freedom of childhood expression and the process of reproduction by a trained artist.
I reproduce my daughters’ drawings by tracing, enlarging and repeating their spontaneous scribbles and gestures into oil and acrylic paintings and colour pencil drawings. I make a series of decisions about quality of lines, colour, rules learned through years of looking at and making art, to create carefully balanced compositions. Through my paintings and drawings, I aim to unite high art, popular culture and the natural urge to mark make.
