About this Event

The Fine Arts are notorious for their lack of representation for women. With female artists less likely to have work sold through a gallery or achieve the highest sums at auction. The situation is changing and Her Art-Story celebrates the achievements of successful women working in the arts.

Her Art-Story is a series of intimate conversations between invited female artists and curators intended to provide inspiration to negotiate your own path in the art world or at the least have a greater understanding of female practitioners breaking new ground. All the artists at the forefront of their field share how they developed their practice and professional career and offer straightforward advice. Her Art-Story and Turf Projects, Croydon are delighted to invite you to listen to a conversation between Emma Hill, gallerist and curator and Liliane Lijn artist.

About the speakers:

Liliane Lijn (b.1939) is a highly acclaimed international artist who has worked across many disciplines during her 50 year career. From early kinetic poem machines to large scale moving sculptures that respond to each other through laser technology, Lijn’s work has always been defined by its highly original combinations of industrial materials and artistic processes.

Lijn’s work incorporates art, science, mythology and technology with an abiding concern for the power and subliminal influence of language. In 1965 she began a series of koan sculptures which continue to this day, many of which incorporate text and use kinesis to ‘re-energise the word, to give it back power and fresh meaning’. In 2005 she was awarded an ACE International Artist Fellowship at the Space Sciences Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, in partnership with NASA and the Leonardo Network.
