My work mainly focuses on biographical material and Russian history.

‘The landscape of post memory is peopled by faces from the past, by images in and out of the family album. Memory is mediated, cultural, but it has also escaped through the open doorway in the photograph to haunt the landscapes of the present…’ (Hirsch, Marianne: The Generation of Postmemory).

I am drawn to my own private archive of photographs and other fragmented material. In particular images of my family and complete strangers stand out and attract me in various ways. 

These “ghosts” have become part of my landscape, reconfiguring the domestic as well as the public spaces of  post life. The memory of what is lost, inconsolable, melancholy, keeping tally of those losses while knowing, that nothing can be returned

My work present the fixation of moments, “snapshots”, embedded in a fictional narrative and sometimes symbolism turned into introspective discovery and documentation. My work captures the photographic evidence of what has been, mixed with the impression that particular image evokes in the viewer. 

The preciousness of the family archive and creating meaning from scattered pieces of memory form the base of my practice, which memorialises an attempt to locate such meaning in juxtaposition to the impossibility of telling these histories, the impossibility of saving anything at all. The use of symbolism connects to the notion that the past cleaves itself to the present, burrows under its skin, leaving its spores there. We are only ready to fully get to know someone after that person has gone; we are endlessly vulnerable, desperately interesting, utterly defenceless. Especially after we are gone.
