In recent years my subject matter has been still life based but rarely do I ‘set up’ a still life – a work might start with some flowers or a plate of pears in the studio but what happens next on the canvas is totally unplanned.
My paintings are essentially about pattern and colour and the simplification of the picture plane. Which colours to use are triggered by any number of things such as red pears, shocking pink and green dragon fruit, or a child dressed in a bright pink coat with acid green dress and yellow wellies. In recent years oriental pots have become a bit of an obsession – started by a Japanese pot that belonged to my grandmother - others found in flea markets and charity shops have crept into my paintings.
