I mostly work with oil paint on canvas or board, exploring the space between representation and abstraction. I don’t usually map out my paintings ahead of time; working instead spontaneously and experimentally. I primarily make art to amuse myself.

I like to play around with different ways of working with paint. I sometimes work quickly using thin applications that allow the texture of the canvas to show through, resulting in lighter paintings. Other times I work with layer upon layer of paint, applied with either a brush, pallet knife or rag which is then rubbed, scraped and scratched adding depth and complexity resulting in a heavier painting. I often rework paintings again and again; the finished work reflects the collision of new on top of old.

I am particularly interested in the power of volatile weather. My current practice is an exploration of changing skylines, expectation of rain and the beauty and transformative violence of tornados. Some of the titles are taken from the mysterious, poetic language of the UK shipping forecast. The lulling qualities of the shipping forecast are often at odds with the realities of weather conditions. In this series of paintings I've tried to capture this juxtaposition by depicting the ominous beauty of dangerous weather.

I live and work in London having relocated from San Francisco in 2008. I am a landscape architect and currently focused on my painting practice.
