Susie Wright is a London born artist and curator who lives and works in Germany. With environment at the heart of her practice, she uses her signature 'Swalkeling' method and a range of self-styled processes, to create her own personal cartography. She uses her experience of place and landscape to weave concepts together into multi-layered collections. Works on paper, installation, print, painting, sculptural objects in the expanded field and confetti, make up her portfolio.

Statement

My signature ‘Swalkeling’ method as a process in itself, explores the tension between chance discovery and the mechanics of evaluating and selecting finds. My encounters with small objects and structures in public spaces, throw up unexpected content and ideas for my work. I use thread to notionally record my routes and also work with these incidental still lives, pairing them with a connected world, referencing a bigger journey between people and places, the social landscape of the objects themselves, point beyond the time at which I find them.

I have come across a number of things while swalkeling; including playing cards, contact sticker alarm strips and a discarded plastic circle radius master. These have all informed the imagery in my work, including a self devised anti tarot card pack ‘The Talking Deck’ and my own designed confetti cut outs.

On occasion, I put my own artwork back in to the environment, where my confetti flames and people become the object of the lens. These interventions jar the authenticity of the process of real time collecting and add another layer of meaning. My concept photographs in the expanded field, visualise even wider possibilities and are project proposals in themselves.

These small human made objects, trash which has been overlooked, appear as a portfolio of semes that will mark the Anthropocene.

My experimental self styled processes all contain an element of chance. I relinquish control with my ‘confetti drifts’, digital spills, use of the pull of gravity, my automatic drawing process, Co2 puffs ( a manually operated spray mechanism) and with machine duplicated drawings…….My works all draw on these processes but also go beyond the material, to explore these environments as psychological spaces.

The idea of portability and effective use of resources is also part of my practice, much of my work is paperbased and repurposes materials. I run my own studio ecosystem in which I recycle and upcycle my own art works. I consciously play on the tension between abstraction and representation, meaning and decoration, the individual and society.

This website ‘susiesatelier’ is a key part of my practice, the atelier is an online gallery, a physical space and an umbrella for collaboration. It is also the place where my public accountability lies. I feel strongly that my artistic practice should serve you as my public, the range of artworks and my collections give you a choice about how you engage and space for your own interpretation.
